The starting point of Section 5 of the Hong Kong Trail is located near Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. Wong Nai Chung Reservoir was completed in 1899 and once served as a supplementary water source for the Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs, further expanding the facilities for storing water on Hong Kong Island. Since the 1980s, Wong Nai Chung Reservoir has no longer been used for storing drinking water and was converted into the current Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park by the former Urban Council. Now open to the public, it is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. From the starting point, walk about 550 m along Tai Tam Reservoir Road to reach the entrance of the Wilson Trail and Hong Kong Trail. Although Section 5 of the Hong Kong Trail is only 4 km long, it features significant elevation changes. Following the trail, after reaching the junction of trails towards Siu Ma Shan and Tai Fung Au, continue in the direction of Tai Fung Au, and you will soon reach the summit of Mount Butler. Standing at the Mt. Butler Viewing Point, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Tai Tam Upper Reservoir and Violet Hill, as well as distant views of the bustling commercial districts on both sides of Victoria Harbour. After a short rest, continue down the path to Tai Fung Au, where you will reach the endpoint of Section 5 of the Hong Kong Trail.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong Trail, public can participate in the “Unlocking Hong Kong Trail” hiking challenge from now until 28th February, 2026. Participants can first register at the event website: www.unlockinghktrail.hk, then visit the eight sections of Hong Kong Trail. To “unlock” the checkpoints and collect e-badges, participants should scan the QR code at the checkpoints using smart phones and answer a question about the fun facts of Hong Kong Trail. Participants may be awarded a commemorative prize if they have completed all eight checkpoints during the event period.
