From the starting point, walk for about 270 m to a junction. Follow the directional sign for “South Lantau Country Trail” and turn left, heading toward Pak Kung Au for around 7 km. The trail winds through shaded path, crossing stone bridges and streams, with the gentle sound of running water and dappled light filtering through the trees. Along the way you can enjoy distant views of Pui O Wan, as well as a bird’s‑eye view of Shek Kwu Chau and Cheung Sha Beach. The beach stretches for about 3 km, with clear water and fine white sand; it is the longest beach in Hong Kong. Looking back, you can also take in views of the majestic slopes of Sunset Peak, with its undulating ridgelines laid out before you.
On reaching Pak Kung Au, cross Tung Chung Road to continue the hike. Follow the directional sign for “Ngong Ping via Lantau Peak” and head up a short flight of stone steps. At the next junction, turn left along the directional sign for “South Lantau Country Trail”. After walking a further 2 km, you will come to another junction. Follow the directional sign for “Shui Hau via catchwater” and continue for about 800 m. This section offers views of the imposing Lantau Peak above and the scenery over Shui Hau, where mountains and sea form a picturesque landscape. The trail ends when you reach the catchwater, which marks the endpoint of this route.
