Children growing up in the city make no secret of their intense dislike of insects – they either avoid or smack any insects in sight. To help your children make friends with insects, why not start with butterflies? The latest butterfly checklist in Hong Kong has recorded more than 200 species, over a hundred of which can be found in Shing Mun Country Park. With nectar and larval food plants in its Butterfly Paradise and Butterfly Garden, the country park abounds with butterflies and is perfect for butterfly watching. In particular, it is home to Common Birdwing and White Dragontail, the largest and smallest swallowtails respectively. Any time between April and June, when temperature goes up, is ideal for butterfly watching; in late October. Danaids may gather in the country park before migrating to other overwintering sites.

Take Green Minibus route no. 82 at Shiu Wo Street, Tsuen Wan, to the Pineapple Dam at Shing Mun Reservoir.

Walk along Shing Mun Reservoir Walk for 15 minutes to reach Butterfly Garden (via Visitor Centre, Butterfly Paradise and Forest Track). Or

Walk along Forest Track next to the Refreshment Kiosk for 25 minutes to reach Butterfly Garden.



Or take public transport to "Ho Fung College" bus stop. Walk along Shing Mun Road for 15 minutes to reach Pineapple Dam at Shing Mun Reservoir.
