How far is the countryside from the city? Just a 5-minute walk from Pok Fu Lam Road takes you to the Pok Fu Lam Family Walk. Although undulating, this family walk is not difficult and suitable for family outings. The starting point passes by Hong Kong’s first reservoir, the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery from low to high. The reservoir was built in 1863 and its expansions were completed in 1877 to address water shortages in the early days of Hong Kong’s establishment. The former watchman’s cottage, gauge basin, and four masonry bridges built of granite are all declared monuments. Leaving the reservoir and entering the woodlands, you will cross several bridges over streams. The abundant water supply and the tall trees provide a habitat for a myriad of birds and insects. You can often hear the distant and nearby calls of birds in the forest.
