If you are looking for mature secondary forests in Hong Kong, Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve is the place.  Dotted with native plants like Wild Coffee, Anti-febrile Dichroa and Machilus, it is ideal for “forest bathing", which involves walking in the forest with your children, listening to bird songs or watching freshwater fish and Hong Kong Newt by the streams. All over Tai Po Kau Outdoor Study Centre, you can easily catch sight of butterflies. At night in midsummer, you can seek traces of the unique courtship flash behaviour of fireflies; on the pond you can find a variety of frog species, including Brown Tree Frog, which makes sounds like those of a machine gun and Gunther's Frog, which croaks like muffled dogs' bark As they croak, their vocal sacs are inflated to make the sound louder.  Let your children discover the fun of the countryside there.
