The Hong Kong Trail (Section 6) is located at Quarry Gap, which sits at an elevation of over 300 m. This site was once home to the Taikoo Sanitarium. The sanitarium was built in 1892 by Butterfield & Swire to serve as a summer retreat for senior staff and their families from the Taikoo Sugar Refinery and dockyards. To facilitate access for employees and their families, Butterfield & Swire also constructed a cable car system that transported them from near the sugar refinery in Quarry Bay to the sanitarium. The sanitarium was later demolished in 1932. From the starting point, follow the forest track for about 2 km to Tai Tam Upper Reservoir. The beautiful scenery of the reservoir comes into view, with the azure waters contrasting against the lush surrounding hills, creating a tranquil and refreshing atmosphere. After the completion of Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, the demand for drinking water continued to grow. To meet this need, the government constructed several larger reservoirs between 1883 and 1917, including Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir, and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. From the main dam of Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, walk for about 350 m to the junction of trails toward Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and Tai Tam Road, and continue in the direction of Tai Tam Road. Follow the forest track for a further 250 m and look to your left for the Milestone of Kwan Tai Lo. Erected between 1850 and 1859, this milestone marked the distance along the route from Stanley to the City of Victoria, known as "Kwan Tai Lo" in Cantonese. Continue along the forest track for another 120 m to a picnic site, where you will see a red-brick house believed to have been built in the 1920s as accommodation for police guards. Then, walk for about 380 m to the junction of trails toward Tai Tam Road and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. Continue toward Tai Tam Road, and follow a shaded path for about 1.5 km to Tai Tam Road, which marks the end of the Hong Kong Trail (Section 6).
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong Trail, public can participate in the “Unlocking Hong Kong Trail” hiking challenge from now until 28th February, 2026. Participants can first register at the event website: www.unlockinghktrail.hk, then visit the eight sections of Hong Kong Trail. To “unlock” the checkpoints and collect e-badges, participants should scan the QR code at the checkpoints using smart phones and answer a question about the fun facts of Hong Kong Trail. Participants may be awarded a commemorative prize if they have completed all eight checkpoints during the event period.
To facilitate the public in planning their hikes, the geographical information of the route, including the route map, starting point, endpoint, and elevation chart, has been saved in a "GPX" file. The public can download hiking-related applications on their smartphones or smart watches, then click on the following "GPX" file to import the relevant information, which serves as an aid for hiking. Please note that downloading "GPX" files may increase data usage, and the functions and content display may vary depending on the device and application used.
