Section 4 of the Lantau Trail begins at the Ngong Ping archway. Near the archway there is a brightly coloured sculpted phoenix. Southeast of the flat land, a rain shelter gives wonderful views over the deep Shek Pik valley. One can look down from the shelter onto the Shek Pik Reservoir. The Wisdom path is closed to the rain shelter. Wisdom Path is a large-scale wood sculpture which contains 38 woods. The woods were carved on the whole "Heart Sutra". This section of the Lantau Trail passes above the north of Shek Pik Reservoir. The construction of Shek Pik Reservoir was completed in 1963. Its massive dam, over 700 metres long and over 50 metres high, was the largest in Hong Kong. Now there is a two-way road across the dam, and traffic moves across it all day. On the east of the reservoir, a flood-relief channel, 24 metres wide allows the reservoir to reach a total storage level of 25 million cubic metres. In 1963 Shek Pik held more water than any other reservoir in the territory. On a nearby hill a park commemorates the work and risks of building the reservoir, and an inscription there records the story.
