Introduction:
Hong Kong Trail Section Six travels downhill from Quarry
Gap on Mount Parker Road. For most of the way,
Section Six runs along restricted vehicular roads
that are wide and easy to walk, and the last
section is a comfortable and well-shaded woodside
path. All in all, it is a route suitable for
the whole family. Follows the Mount Parker section
of the Island Forest Walk, the trail soon penetrates
deep into the woods. The canopies of Machilus
spread all the way to the road, overlapping to
form a huge parasol to block off the sun. Indeed,
this "green tunnel" is so cool you
can hardly feel the heat even on a steaming summer
day.
During World War II, the local vegetation was
badly damaged. As soon as the war came to an end,
the Government initiated a large scale reforestation
plan. After half a century of natural succession,
the vegetation and wildlife of Tai Tam Valley have
literally turned a new leaf. The flourishing secondary
forests we see today boost a rich diversity of
flora and fauna. Along the trail, you can spot
two rare flora species: Don Blue Berry (Vaccinium
bracteatum chinense) and Scarlet Kadsura (Kadsura
coccinea).
Walking uphill along the Mount
Parker Road catchment route, you soon arrive at
Tai Tam Reservoir. The second facility of its kind
built in Hong Kong, it is a water storage system
made up of four reservoirs: Tai Tam Upper Reservoir,
Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate
Reservoir and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. Beyond the
main dam, the trail joins Tai Tam Reservoir Road.
Continuing on, you come to the No. 6 and No. 7
Tai Tam Barbecue Areas where a red brick building
offers shelter in case of rain. Up ahead, the trail
follows a vehicular road and turns right into a
forest path near Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir.
Carry on for another 20 minutes and you arrive
at Tai Tam Road, the end of Hong Kong Trail Section
Six.
